Doctoral researcher Malin Ekelund and Prof. Jan Antfolk attended the international conference on LGBTQ+ Refugees in the Welfare State: Research, Policy and Practitioners in Dialogue. The conference was held at Ekonomikum, Uppsala University and hosted by the Department of Human Geography at Uppsala University together with the QUEEN (QUeer rEfugees rEsearch in the Nordics) network, and funded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Psych-AID at the American Psychology–Law Conference 2026

The Psych-AID Network, together with its partners, took part in the American Psychology–Law Conference 2026, held in Reno, Nevada. Dr. Dilhan Töredi and Prof. Jan Antfolk presented on PsychAID research examining cognitive bias beliefs among asylum officers across Europe and the reverse halo effect in the asylum context.

Psych-AID at the Joint Nordic Network Meeting: LGBTQ+-H-L and QUEEN

Doctoral Researcher Malin Ekelund participated in the Joint Nordic Network Meeting in Malmö (24–25 November 2025), themed “Queer Methodologies” and co‑hosted by the LGBTQ+-H‑L Network and the QUEEN Network. Malin presented her research, “The Effect of Stereotype Congruence on Credibility Assessments of Sexual Minority Asylum Claims: Psychological Mechanisms and Intersectional Influences.”

Psych-AID at the Shaping Tomorrow: Queer Asylum in Europe 2025 Conference

Psych-AID attends the (Re-)Constructing Credibility in Refugee Status Determination Workshop

Doctoral researchers Malin Ekelund and Obed Appiah, together with Psych-AID principal investigator Jan Antfolk, participated in the (Re-)Constructing Credibility in Refugee Status Determination Workshop at the University of Copenhagen. The workshop aimed to foster discussion on research related to credibility assessment in the asylum context and to clarify what researchers mean when they refer to credibility.

Psych-AID Presentation at Åbo Akademi Lunch Seminars in Minority Studies

Public Defence of Doctoral Thesis by Doctoral Researcher Hedayat Selim

Doctoral Researcher Hedayat Selim successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Psychological aspects in the evaluation of asylum claims based on sexual orientation” on Friday, 22 August 2025. Professor Jan Antfolk served as the custos, while Associate Professor Hilary Evans Cameron served as the opponent.

Psych-AID at the European Association of Psychology and Law Conference 2025

Professor Jan Antfolk is awarded funds for the Stereotype-Matching Hypothesis in Asylum Claims project

Professor Jan Antfolk has been awarded more grants for his research on improving asylum procedures. The project is entitled “Experimental Tests of the Stereotype-Matching Hypothesis in Asylum Claims Based on Religious or Sexual Identity [ExClaim]!” and it aims to use novel methods to understand psychological mechanisms that affect decision-making in the asylum process.
