Sea Seminar: The Diverse Faces of WATERWAYS – Biodiversity, Cables and Participatory Modelling for Sustainable Seas

This seminar will present some of the ongoing work of the Åbo Akademi University School of law affiliated with the WATERWAYS project funded by the Strategic Research Council of Finland.

This presentation will provide an outline of the recent Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (Congress) report on halting biodiversity loss and its drafting and adoption process, including links to subnational action under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In addition, the aim is to reflect on the potential of the report to inspire action on the ground as well as Waterways-related research, using related efforts in coastal municipalities of south-western Finland as an example.

This talk will briefly summarize the main legal issues linked to two main security-related threats facing the Finnish coastline today: the suspected cases of sabotage of underwater infrastructure; and the ‘shadow fleet’.

This presentation will highlight the recent work on participatory Bayesian Network modelling carried out as a cooperation between the ÅAU School of law, University of Helsinki as well as Kotka Maritime Research Centre and several volunteer maritime actors from Finland.

Dr. Hermanni Backer Johnsen is a project-funded Senior Researcher at the Åbo Akademi University School of Law, working with Waterways, a related SOS Booster project “Marine Folk Proto”, as well as the recently completed Openrisk II project on maritime risk management tools for the Baltic Sea. Common themes include better international regulation and management at the intersection of maritime transport, security and marine environmental governance.

Dr. Henrik Ringbom is Professor of Environmental Law and the Law of the Sea at the Åbo Akademi University in Finland and currently the Head of the Åbo Akademi Law School. He is currently PI and work package leader for the Protect Baltic, the Waterways projects and the GNTS (Nordic energy transition at sea) network.

Deborah Shinoda is Doctoral Researcher at University of Helsinki. She has participated in several European projects related to Maritime Spatial Planning and is currently conducting research on uncertainty analysis and long-term planning within the Waterways project, building on MSP as the foundation for her research.

The Sea Seminar series is a collaboration between the ÅAU profiling area The Sea and SOS. The seminars are organized once a month with a hybrid setup (click here for online participation), and they are open to everyone interested in marine and sustainability issues.
