SOS Annual Meeting 2026

SOS OUTCOME SESSION
Wednesday, 7 October, 14:30–16:00

Transdisciplinary Ecologies: Building Shared Worlds through Friction, Collaboration, and Emergent Community

Transdisciplinarity, the co-creation of knowledge through collaboration between researchers and non-academic actors, is often presented as a unique way of approaching wicked problems in genuinely innovative ways. Yet transdisciplinary research can itself become a wicked problem: how do we enable diverse communities to work together when academic practices and university structures are often poorly equipped to support such forms of collaboration?

Through our work with SOS, the CHARM-EU Doctoral Summer School network, and the Polin Institute of Theological Research, we have been developing workshops and a course entitled Knowledge at Sea. Here, we experiment with the Living Laboratories concept through artistic research and practice-based learning. Rather than seeking to avoid friction, we explore how collaborators can navigate into, through, and beyond points of friction, and how these encounters can become productive sites for learning, knowledge creation, and collaboration.

In this session, you will experience these methods first-hand through a mini-workshop focused on complex ecological problems. Together, we will explore how practice-based approaches can generate new insights while developing our capacity to think, make, and build together.
