Cultural Value of Archipelago Sea Area
The Cultural Value of Coastlines project examines where and how we engage with and value our marine and coastal environments. This effort is part of the MARBEFES project and the survey regarding the Archipelago Sea area is conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Sustainable Ocean Science (SOS).
By answering, you can let us know more about why the Archipelago Sea matters to you. The survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and is available in Finnish, Swedish, and English.
MARBEFES has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement no 101060937. SOS is a Centre of Excellence at Åbo Akademi University, funded by the Åbo Akademi University Foundation during 2024–2028.
How Finns Relate to Baltic Sea Species
A nationwide survey invites people living in Finland, aged 18 and up, to participate in a study exploring human relationships with marine species in the Baltic Sea. The survey was launched on Baltic Sea Day, Thursday, August 28th, as part of doctoral researcher Jolanda Linsén’s PhD project. The research aims to deepen our understanding of how people recognize, interact with, and emotionally respond to the marine life that surrounds them, offering insights into both ecological and cultural connections to marine biodiversity.
The survey examines familiarity with Baltic Sea species and explores how interactions through work, studies, hobbies, or media shape public perceptions. These findings will inform marine conservation efforts by connecting ecological data with human experiences.
The survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and is available in Finnish, Swedish, and English. It will remain open until Baltic Sea Day 2026, or until enough responses are collected. Participants can also enter a raffle for S-group gift cards worth 50 euros, drawn in December 2025.
