Come build the Archipelago Sea Year 2025 together!
How is the Archipelago Sea doing in 2025? Our archipelago of 40,000 islands and islets in a shallow brackish water environment provides habitats for a diversity of species, both under the sea and on land. Humans have inhabited the archipelago since the Stone Age, both utilizing marine resources and adapting to the special marine environment. Today, our unique and important ocean is associated with many challenges. But the solutions to improve the state of the sea are also growing, as knowledge about the sea increases.
The thematic Archipelago Sea Year 2025, organized by the Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve, aims to raise awareness and discussions in society about the current state of the sea and how to address the challenges it faces. The Archipelago Sea and its environment connect countless sectors, people, communities and phenomena, and by paying attention to all of them, we can find new ways to understand and act for the good of the sea. Solutions to the difficult and complex problems that threaten biodiversity and the viability of the region need both knowledge and action. This is what the Archipelago Sea Year is all about.
The Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve invites all interested parties to join in and help build the thematic year together. The backbone of the year is formed by events that share and discuss the latest research on the Archipelago Sea and bring together science and culture. The events will primarily be organized in the biosphere reserve, within Pargas or Kimitoön, but events in other places are also welcome.
The objectives of the Archipelago Sea Year are to
- Make visible and actively discuss the latest scientific findings on the Archipelago Sea and the archipelago.
- Improve the state of the Archipelago Sea and the dialog between researchers and society.
- Create confidence in the future and to promote and nurture biodiversity.
- Support a vibrant archipelago community.
You can participate for example by
- Organizing an event that offers space for collaborating and sharing information related to the Archipelago Sea and the archipelago.
- Organizing cultural events that highlight important themes related to the Archipelago Sea.
- Disseminating knowledge through exhibitions or materials.
- Highlighting important issues related to the Archipelago Sea through various forms of art.
