Sea Seminar: SOS One-year Showcase
Multiple speakers
In honor of the Centre’s one-year anniversary, SOS researchers present the ongoing research and case-studies in work packages 1-3. Join us to learn what we’ve been up to during our first year in action, and to hear what’s in store for the near future!
The seminar includes a brief overview of current SOS research activities, as well as presentations on each of the workpackages:
WP1, Healthy and clean seas, aims to increase our understanding on the interlinkages between structure (e.g. habitat extent, distribution and density), function (e.g. the physical, chemical and biological processes) and ecosystem services (e.g. regulatory and cultural services) in key habitats in the Archipelago Sea.
WP2, Food production, seeks solutions to improve food production development in coastal areas through, for example, identifying strategies and prerequisites for the restoration of key habitat-forming macrophytes in fish nursery habitats.
WP3, Land-sea interaction, develops science-based solutions for the successful co-existence of marine activities and coastal nature. This includes research into offshore wind farm development and assessing multiple stressors (abiotic and anthropogenic) at the land-sea intersection.
We will also hear about a project where Meyer Turku is working together with a multidisciplinary team of Åbo Akademi University and SOS researchers in an effort to mitigate the shipyard’s impacts on biodiversity. There will be time in the end for audience questions and discussion.

The Sea Seminar series is a collaboration between the ÅAU profiling are The Sea and SOS. The seminars are organized once a month with a hybrid setup (click here for online participation), and they are open to everyone interested in marine and sustainability issues.
