Konsten att rädda Östersjön – bland paragrafer och performance
Welcome to an evening where law, art, and marine ecology meet! This unique event, part of the SOS Booster-funded project Saving the Baltic Sea with Law?, brings together lawyers, researchers, and artists to explore the future of the Baltic Sea through an interplay between research, law, and performance art.
The Baltic Sea is sometimes referred to as the world’s most regulated sea area. Yet, despite decades of efforts and countless legal rules and policies to improve its protection, we have not been able to effectively reduce the pressures that stress it. Multi-disciplinary and multilevel governance approaches have come and gone, but many of the key challenges, including eutrophication, remain acute in the Baltic Sea. This raises the question: Are we doing something wrong? Could we do more and, if so, who should act?
What is probably less widely known is that law as a discipline in itself is quite ‘multi-disciplinary’—consisting of multiple strands, subjects and specialties, often characterized by their own styles, methods and language. Barriers between different legal disciplines may be surprisingly high, sometimes posing challenges for inter-law collaboration. With this event, Åbo Akademi University’s newly established School of Law wishes to contribute towards lowering such barriers.
Through collaboration across legal disciplines and with renowned artists, we hope to demonstrate how the different disciplines can and do work for the benefit of a shared goal: saving the Baltic Sea.
This event is experimental and interdisciplinary. We invite you to experience it with curiosity and openness—hoping that you leave not only inspired, but with a deeper understanding of the role that law, in concert with art, can play in safeguarding the future of the Baltic Sea.
The language of the event is Swedish.
The event is free of charge and open to all! Please sign up in advance by 3 November:
