Dr. Tanja van Veldhuizen (1990) is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Criminology at VU University in Amsterdam, and member of the Amsterdam Laboratory for Legal Psychology (ALLP). Tanja studied social psychology in Utrecht and obtained a joint doctorate degree in legal psychology from Maastricht University (NL) and the University of Gothenburg (SE). In her PhD project she studied interviewing practice and credibility assessments in asylum cases, and specifically cases in which the applicant’s origin could not be corroborated with identity documents. Her current research focuses on investigative interviewing, statement validity and evidence assessment in diverse legal contexts, with special attention for asylum procedures and intercultural contexts. Tanja regularly teaches master classes to immigration officials, and gives lectures and post-academic education to other professionals, such as lawyers and judges. She is also involved in Project Reasonable doubt, in which students investigate closed criminal cases in which there are doubts regarding the conviction.
