Travelling to Turku

There are numerous routes available when travelling to Turku. Below are the most convenient options worth considering:

To/From Turku Airport

The fastest way to travel to Turku from abroad is by air. Turku proudly hosts the oldest civilian airport in Finland which is located only 9km away from the city centre. There are a few flight options which take you directly to the Turku airport: 

  • (Sweden) Stockholm-Turku (Operated by SAS). 
  • (Denmark) Copenhagen-Turku (Operated by SAS). 
  • (Poland) Gdansk-Turku (Operated by Wizz Air). 

Upon arrival at the airport, the yellow city bus #1 (operated by Föli) will take you directly to the city centre. The journey takes approximately 22 minutes. Bus tickets can be purchased directly on the bus, or via the Föli app. More information about ticket prices can be found in the “Getting Around Turku” section. 

Alternatively, there are taxi’s available at the airport. You could also arrange a pickup via taxi services such as Menevä or Taxidata, as well as ride-share apps such as Uber or Bolt.  

To/From Helsinki Airport 

There are more, and ususally cheaper, air routes available to the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport. Upon arrival in Helsinki, there are train and bus options that will take you to Turku.

The national train operator VR allows you to travel in comfort to Turku. It is most likely that you will be arriving via the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. There is a route from the Helsinki airport to Turku with one transfer at the Pasila station.  

When travelling on this route, there are two stations in Turku you can arrive at:  

  1. The first stop on this route is Kupittaa (Turku) which stops at the Kupittaa Railway Station. It is approximately a 1.5km walk to the city centre. 
  1. The main railway station Turku (City Centre, Logomo) is located at the Logomo Bridge. This station is located 1km from the city centre. 

Be sure to check which stop is closest to your accommodation for your convenience. Train tickets can be purchased via the operator’s website at VR, or via their app.

There are long distance bus connections available to Turku operated by Onnibus and Matkahuolto. Bus tickets are usually cheaper if purchased online and in advance. 

If you are arriving in Finland by air at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, there are busses operated by Matkahuolto leaving approximately every hour directly from the airport to Turku. The traveling time between Helsinki airport and the Turku bus station is about two and a half hours. The final stop in Turku for long distance buses is Turku Bus Station (Turku) which is the main bus station (linja-autoasema) located 1km from the city centre. Be aware that there may be a change of bus in Espoo during the trip from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Turku. The bus personnel will inform you about the change and your luggage will be transferred by the bus personnel. 

There is an option to arrive in Turku via sea from Stockholm. There are daily connections operated by the cruise liners Viking Line and Tallink Silja

The Port of Turku (Turun Satama) is located 3km from the city centre. The city bus #1 travels from the city centre to the harbour.

Getting Around Turku

Turku is a relatively small city and is perfectly walkable. Åbo Akademi University is located only 1.3km from the city centre. If needed, there are numerous options for getting around the city.

Turku’s local bus connections are efficient and safe and it is an easy and economical way to get around the city. The local bus network operated by Föli covers also the Turku airport, harbour, railway station and bus station with frequent connections.  

Bus tickets can be purchased on the bus itself in cash or by card. With card payments, simply tap the terminal when you walk in. Tickets prices vary depending on the time of day and the method of payment: 

  • Prices during the day are €3.15 (card payment) and €4.50 (cash payment). 
  • Prices during the night (23:00-04:00) are €4.15 (card payment) and €5.50 (cash payment).  

Tickets are valid for transfers on all local buses for up to two hours. Local buses run approximately at 6.00 – 23.00. There are also a few late-night connections.

The city bikes, or “Föli-föllärit”, can be rented for a short time using the Donkey Republic app. More information on how to rent a Föli bike can be found here.  

E-scooters can be rented for a short time via their operators, Ryde, Dott, and Voi. Each operator may have slightly different areas of use. Simply download the app with the operator name and follow the instructions provided.  

Remember to always park your electric scooter in the allocated parking areas if they are available. If no spaces are available, make sure the scooter does not disturb other riders or road users. 

Taxis are available at specific taxi stations (e.g. around the Market Square). You could also arrange a pickup via taxi services such as Taxidata or Menevä. Depending on the length of the trip and time of the day, a taxi from e.g. Turku Airport to the city centre may cost around 20-25€. 

There are cheaper options in ride-share apps such as Bolt or Uber.

Accommodation in Turku

Food & Activities

There are several restaurants on the campuses of Åbo Akademi and University of Turku where you can have lunch during the day. The daily menus can be found at the links provided.  

  • Kårkaféerna restaurants 
    • Arken Café is the restaurant at the conference venue and your most convenient option.  
    • Kårkaféerna restaurants closest to the conference venue are ASA, Aurum, and Kåren 
  • Macciavelli: This is a university restaurant located 500m down the road from the conference venue at the University of Turku.  
  • Piccu Maccia: This is an exclusively vegetarian restaurant located 500m down the road from the conference venue. (NOTE! Not open on Fridays).  
  • There are a plenty of restaurants, café’s, and bars along Hämeenkatu, a 10-minute walk from the conference venue. Some of these cafes offer lunch.
