The environmental impact from acid sulfate soils contributes to poor water status. The primary goal with the MASSIW project is to, through cooperation and scientific expertise, reach the good water quality status according to what was put forth by the EU water framework directive in areas affected by acid sulfate soils, including Ostrobothnia (Finland) och West Bothnia (Sweden). The goal is healthier waters, maintaining good harvests, and increased resistance against the climate change.

An important part in this project is that it will be done together with landowners. This is done by developing models in sub-catchment areas, such as together with single farmers, that will take into account the acid sulfate soils and reduce their impact on water environments.
Through education and exchanging experiences with, among others, landowners, researchers, and environmental agencies, opportunities are explored for solutions where the environment and the economy go hand in hand.
