After a long journey through seven valleys, only thirty remain—and in their reflection, they realize that the Simurgh, whose name means “thirty birds,” is none other than themselves. In the performance and installation The Conference of the Birds, the audience breathes life into thirty clay birds by artist Afrang Nordlöf Malekian, inspired by the claybird collection at Sibelius Museum. By sounding these sculptural wind instruments, we create a collective signal that directs our attention toward the Baltic Sea and a future in which it is preserved. From this avian perspective, the work seeks new ways of speaking and listening—of bearing witness—to the Baltic Sea.

Afrang Nordlöf Malekian (b. 1995) is an Iranian-Swedish artist based in Berlin and Stockholm, who creates performances and installations informed by processes of hybridization in migratory cultures. Through storytelling and collective acts he explores how entanglements between precolonial, colonial, migratory, human, and non-human cultural forms can transform into evasive, flexible forces that advance collective endeavors. Afrang Nordlöf Malekian is the 2025 recipient of the Maria Bonnier Dahlin Foundation grant and his work will be presented at Bonniers Konsthall in December this year. He is represented by the Moderna Museet, the Public Art Agency Sweden, and the Arab Image Foundation Library. Afrang Nordlöf Malekian has previously conducted artistic research at the Arab Image Foundation, was an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and is currently creating the public artwork The River Organ with artist Theresa Traore Dahlberg for Packhuskajen in Gothenburg. His work has been exhibited at venues including the 10th Berlin Biennale, Sophiensaele, Moderna Museet, and Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius.

Konsten att rädda Östersjön – bland paragrafer och performance
4.11 kl. 18.00
Sibeliusmuseum

Afrang Nordlöf Malekian: Fåglarnas konferens / The Conference of the Birds I poeten Attar av Nishapurs dikt Fåglarnas konferens (1177) samlas alla världens fåglar för att tillsammans hitta den mytiska sanningsfågeln Simurgh.
